Pair of Petite Sancai Spice Jars

With sancai glaze and a richly-aged patina, these petite ceramic spice jars are likely originated as a form of míngqì sculpture, a centuries-old tradition of burial figurines or "spirit objects." Depicting the pleasures of daily life, míngqì figurines ensured comfort and special treatment in the afterlife. Though the age of these small vessels is unknown, the tradition of mingqi ceramics dates back thousands of years and they may date as early as the Tang dynasty (618-907).

Shaped with squat proportions, the little jars have square shoulders and tapered sides stamped with low relief medallions of flowers and botanical scrollwork. The exteriors are finished with green and amber-brown glaze in the style of sancai ware, with free-flowing movement and glassy translucency. Oxidation over the centuries has lent a unique effect to the once-vibrant glazes, creating contrast between matte texture and glossy highlights.
