Working within the time-honored tradition of blue-and-white porcelain, artisans from China's Jiangxi province painted this pair of contemporary double-gourd vases with scenes from a wondrous scholar’s garden. Using the porcelain vessel’s hourglass shape to great advantage, the artist devoted the bottom half to images of literati playing the strategy game of Go, one of the four arts a scholar must master, while nearby attendants hold burning incense. The upper half is lavishly decorated with an intricate trailing vine motif and a regal peacock, a symbol of beauty and dignity.
