Pair of Bentwood Yokeback Armchairs

These classic armchairs from Hebei province have a traditional design known as "yoke-back chairs," defined by tall backs, flat back yokes, and protruding top crest rails. The style is also known as a "lamphanger chair" for its resemblance to bamboo wall lamps, or an "official's hat chair," after the wide-brimmed putou hats worn by early government officials.

This pair dates to the mid-19th century and is crafted of willow and northern elm (yumu). The arms have been carefully shaped to bend gracefully down from the top crestrail in one fluid motion, creating a more lightweight design with fewer lines. The legs have been similarly shaped to fold over round horizontal posts comprising the frame of the seat. A dark brown lacquer finish coats the exterior, now beautifully worn with a rich patina.
