More portable than heavy chairs, stools have been a favored form of seating in Chinese culture for centuries and were used indoors and out at mealtimes and during social gatherings. This type of square or rectangular stool is known as a fang deng, and doubles as a low table for displaying objects or serving tea. The stool is crafted in a classical style, featuring a square-corner frame, a floating-panel top, and straight legs ending in hoof feet. The striking silhouette is enhanced by a black lacquer finish, lightly faded from a century of use.
