Made of Chinese elm with exceptionally rich lacquerwork, these cabinets bear traces of the original ornate gilt scenery, depicting traditional Chinese palatial courtyard buildings in a mountainous park setting. At one time, these hand-lacquered scenes were bold in their depiction of the sophisticated grandeur of the period. In the centuries since, the scenes have mellowed into subtle remembrances, appropriate to the era of their creation. Made by traditional joinery techniques, the cabinets project harmony and balance, while solid brass moon hinges and latch closure add a measure of shine. Doors open to two shelves and a set of three drawers.
