This pair of 19th century meticulously proportioned tables was constructed by hand over 150 years ago in the Shanxi region of China by a master artisan. Note the way the stretchers appear to wrap around the legs even though the joints are hidden within. Collectors of Chinese furniture consider tables, chairs and stools designed in this way as 18th and 19th century riffs on earlier mundane furniture constructed of bamboo. These particular examples are named "half tables" because the depth of each is half of its width, together forming a square. The carved medallions on the aprons are unusual and the original lacquer finish has aged beautifully over time, adding incredible overall texture and character to the tables.
