This rustic six-door coffer from the early 20th century balances modern simplicity with humble, timeworn materials. Attributed to artisans of Xinjiang province in Western China, the sideboard is crafted of pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery and richly textured with folk art carvings. The cabinet was originally used as a kang daybed, and has been modified into a coffer with front-facing doors by our carpenters skilled in traditional joinery. Each door is carved in low relief with a round medallion with pinwheel fluting, and the surrounding frame is etched with abstract, botanical scrollwork. Darkened to a rich brown finish, the coffer has a perfectly imperfect finish with a timeworn patina and subtle wear.
