This rustic four-door coffer from the early 20th century balances modern simplicity with humble, timeworn materials. Attributed to artisans of Xinjiang province in Western China, the sideboard is crafted of pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery and richly textured with folk art carvings.

The cabinet was originally used as a kang daybed, and has been modified into a shallow coffer with front-facing doors by our carpenters skilled in traditional joinery. Each door is carved in low relief with a tactile design of vertical fluting and abstract scrollwork. The surrounding frame is similarly etched with abstract, curvilinear motifs, in keeping with with the geometric designs of Central Asian art and furniture.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
