This rustic seven-door coffer from the early 20th century balances modern simplicity with humble, timeworn materials. Attributed to artisans of Xinjiang province in Western China, the sideboard is crafted of pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery and richly textured with folk art carvings. The cabinet was originally used as a kang daybed, and has been modified into a storage coffer with front-facing doors by our carpenters skilled in traditional joinery.

Each door is carved in low relief with an allover pattern of floral scrollwork, save for one simply carved with zig-zags and vertical fluting. The surrounding frame is carved with a pattern of interlocking coins, carrying blessings of eternal wealth and prosperity. Darkened to a light brown finish, the coffer has a perfectly imperfect surface with timeworn texture and traces of the original blue, red and yellow polychromed finish.
