In spite of the simple carving style, the figures supporting this stool are wonderfully expressive. While stools were not a primary focus of the Pende people, long carving lines and chipped details, like the ones on this stools' legs and seat, defined the Pende mask making culture and lead us to the attribution. Serious, playful and sculptural all at once, this object protects and cheers. We also love the way the animals are joined in the center making you wonder if the creatures represent myth or reality.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
