Described by ancient Chinese as a “full moon dyed with spring water,” celadon ware has long been prized for its luminous transparency and delicate blue-green coloring. This petite celadon dish has a lovely, pale blue color and a simple silhouette, shaped of porcelain with flared sides and a short footed base. The small bowl was likely an everyday dish, possibly used for dining, taking tea or storing ink pastes or cosmetics. The glaze has been darkened by pigments during previous use, resulting in a beautiful gradation of color from magenta-pink to purple to celadon blue.
