Petite Gilt Box

This petite keepsake box is a charming example of Japanese lacquer art, or urushi. Layered atop a round wooden substrate, glossy black lacquer cloaks the exterior, contrasted by an interior layer of bright red cinnabar lacquer. In the classic style of gold-against-black, the sides are decorated with a scene of four fishermen pulling a giant sea turtle from the ocean. The lid depicts a man and woman seated for tea in a courtly setting. Gently aged from years of use, this beautiful little box is full of character and makes for a lovely gift.
