Set beside the four treasures of the scholars' studio, brush washers were used by Qing-dynasty scholars to rinse ink from their calligraphy brushes. This shallow brush washer has a compressed globular form and is beautifully decorated in the style of Wang Bingrong, a renowned 19th-century ceramicist known for his relief-carved porcelains. The relief design on this dish depicts two celestial dragons soaring towards a flaming pearl, surrounded by swirling clouds. A monochrome pale lime green glaze cloaks the dish inside and out, enlivening the design with bright color.

Dish has antique repairs to a crack in the base.
