Hewn Pillow Bench

With freeform shape and incredible texture, this low courtyard bench from Shandong province embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy that beauty and integrity can be found within the imperfections of a timeworn object. The seat and back are comprised of solid planks of reclaimed beechwood, seamed with a large bowtie joint and elevated by simple chiseled legs. Textured with blade marks and gnarled movements in the wood grain, the primitive bench exemplifies the enduring appeal of organic forms and natural materials. A large, hollowed block is carved into the left side of the seat as a traditional headrest - or the perfect nook for your tv remote or magazine.
