Like many pieces of traditional African metalwork, this pair of sculptural double bells served multiple purposes for the tribe. They were ceremonial instruments, status symbols, and traded as currency. Using a rubber coated stick, members of the tribal elite would beat one of these bells to create sound during religious ceremonies. Outside of those ceremonies, the instruments were symbols of wealth and power. The curved handles of each bell have been carved into a detailed and expressive face.
