This 19th-century elmwood stool from China's Shanxi province features a narrow seat supported by splayed legs, linked with simple stretcher bars. The stool was constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, without the use of nails or screws, and has an balanced form and timeless rustic appeal. Beautifully darkened from a century of use, the wood's expressive grain is on full display, textured by traces of the stool's original red finish. Unusual for its height, this versatile stool would have been used throughout a courtyard home for a variety of occasions and today is perfect beside a counter or dining table.
