Designed to resemble the painting tables found in traditional scholars' studios, this provincial table was actually constructed using the tall courtyard doors of a Qing-dynasty home. The reclaimed 19th-century door showcases the warm coloring and expressive grain of northern elmwood, and a century of weathering has cloaked the wood's raw texture in a rich patina. Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the table's broad surface is supported by splayed legs linked with simple stretchers. Embodying the restraint of Ming-dynasty design, this beautiful table is well suited for modern interiors as a monumental desk or dining table.
