In households throughout China, low tables like this were commonly used as surfaces for placing ancestral tablets, Buddhist or Daoist iconography, and ceremonial offerings. They served as a family’s home altar where they paid respects to revered ancestors. A table like this might also have been surface for offering tea, wine and food atop a low louhan bed. Crafted with traditional joinery over 150 years ago, it is detailed with a carved scroll apron and charming hoof feet. A rich patina cloaks the table's surface with a smooth texture that calls to be touched.
