The paintings on this 19th century coffer from Mongolia is original and in impeccable condition. The hand-painted scene is fantastical—two traditionally dressed female figures are riding mythical Qilin lion dogs. The women are holding pomegranates symbolizing fertility and ruyi scepters for good luck. A coffer like this was generally commissioned as part of a woman’s dowry and later used as the family altar on which offerings of food and incense would be placed to honor family ancestors.
