This beautiful red lacquer box was once presented as a gift, filled with popular snacks like roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and cinnamon-toasted soy beans. The lightweight box is shaped like a flower and contains nine interior trays, one for each petal and a round tray in the center. The red lacquer exterior is finely painted with the ribbon-clad accessories of the Eight Immortals of Taoism, including a palm leaf fan, a double gourd flask, and a pair of castanets. These auspicious objects are surrounded by fluffy clouds and plum blossoms and colored by traces of the original gilt pigmentation.
