This round tray dates to the early 20th century and is a simple example of Burmese lacquerware. The tray is formed of thin bamboo strips that have been woven and coiled into shape, held in place with a putty of lacquer and sawdust, and finished with layer upon layer of glossy red and black lacquer. Decorated in a style known as "yun" ware, the lacquer finish was finely etched with intricate line work and filled with gold pigments. Originating as one layer of a stacking box, this decorative tray lives on with timeless form and rich texture.

Minor losses to lacquer finish.
