This early 20th century covered jar was likely designed as a decorative centerpiece, but takes its rounded shape from serving tureens used to serve soups and stews. Contrasted by a crisp white field, the lid and sides are decorated by graceful spider chrysanthemums, emblems of autumn and symbols of joviality and longevity. Two thin brass handles hang from the sides and the lid is topped by a petite fu dog protector. Marked by traces of the original gilt pigmentation, this round jar delights with subdued colors and delicate floral designs.
