A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. Crafted in the early 19th century, this set of four lattice door panels from Shanxi province goes beyond the purely functional with a colorful polychromed finish and delicate floral carvings set within the expansive lattice windows.

Evoking the charm of a rural courtyard home, the tall panels feature rectangular window panels of geometric lattice inset with round floral carvings of chrysanthemums and peonies, symbols of longevity and prosperity. The surrounding inset wood panels are finished with layers of the original blue-green lacquer and faded traces of the original paintings of vases filled with peonies and plum blossoms.

Dimensions listed describe an individual panel.
