Cicada Charm Ring

Dated to the late 19th century, this silver charm ring was believed to protect the wearer from bad luck and malevolent spirits. The ring is patterned with a simple floral motif bordered by conch shells and flanked by two cicadas. A common motif in Chinese art, the conch shell is a ritual instrument and a Buddhist symbol, representing the Voice of the Buddha and the transmission of his teachings. Cicadas on the other hand have had many interpretations - as symbols of immortality, integrity, honesty and cyclical resurrection. The ring is complete with three thin chains hanging from the band, each strung with small charms resembling flower petals.
