Low Provincial Stool

The stool is a central fixture of Chinese furniture culture. Found in a variety of materials and forms, the stool transcends class lines, as much at home in the provincial courtyard as it is in the grand hall of a wealthy estate. Whether worked from fine hardwood or cobbled together from wood scraps, the ever-practical stool finds its place in all corners of the home.

This small stool dates to the mid-19th century and would have been used as a low perch for daily household tasks. The rectangular seat is supported by four round legs linked by straight stretchers and simply carved aprons. Richly aged from over a century of use, this low stool brings rustic texture to the modern home.
