This early 19th-century mythical shizi sculpture once protected a Qing-dynasty home in northern China. Shizi, also known as fu lion dogs, were believed to be powerful protectors against malignant spirits, and the artisan who hand-carved this shizi imbued it with a remarkable sense of life and energy. Carved from solid limestone, the sculpture has developed rich character over time, yet retains its original exquisite detail. Today, we love the shizi as a modern protector indoors or out.
