This low, four-leg stool is actually a 19th-century headrest used atop a daybed or mat to support the head while sleeping, reclining, or smoking opium. As an opium accessory, rigid headrests such as this allowed an inebriated smoker to to more comfortably lie on their side and maintain a view of their opium lamp.

This example has a splayed leg design with straight stretchers and supports a gently curved top with beautiful wood grain and a burnished finish. Rustic and conversation-sparking, the headrest displays well on a bookcase, desk or side table.
