A flourish of curves adds graceful counterpoint to this table’s square profile, accentuated with slim, noodle molding. Each of the legs and the central circular medallion within the apron is thought to be in the shape of a chrysanthemum, a flower symbolizing eternity. Legs in this form are unusual to see on tables of this proportion. Made of elmwood, this Qing-dynasty table may have played an honored role in ancestor ceremonies, holding pictures, incense and offerings. Today it would make a gracious side or corner table next to a sofa or a chair.
