Shanxi Stone Drum

This low drum stool from Shanxi province was hand-carved from solid limestone nearly 300 years ago, designed to add the essential stone element to a traditional Chinese garden. Stone drums such as this were fixtures of courtly gardens and outdoor pavilions, contrasting foliage with the permanence of stone and providing a place to sit and ponder. The minimal form of this example has become beautifully weathered with time, textured with minor losses that create an irregular surface and reveal its centuries of use.
