Once used on a provincial Chinese farm to hold water or animal feed, this early 20th-century stone trough is celebrated today for its organic form and rustic authenticity. Hand-carved from solid limestone, the trough has a shallow, rectangular form with slight asymmetry and an etched pattern of vertical grooves. The surface of the stone has softened with time, developing rounded edges and a smooth texture from centuries of use. A drainage hole has been carved into one side, making this trough ideal as a statement garden planter or unexpected sink basin.

Stone Trough Sinks

A stone sink is a unique way to embrace nature in design. Over the years, we’ve worked with clients who have incorporated troughs as sink basins in sleek Chicago apartments to outdoor garden areas in rustic lake houses in California. The stone sinks can “float” on a wall or be integrated into a counter.

We became even more enamored with traditional troughs as sinks after seeing Tramuntana Farmhouse, the idyllic home of Leigh and Pille Morgan on the Balearic island of Mallorca. The trough sinks complement the Spanish stone used throughout the home, while creating sculptural focal points in each space.
