This slender console table dates to the mid-19th century and was once a fixture of a scholar-official's study, originally used as a low surface for reading or taking tea atop a kang platform or daybed. Crafted of elm with traditional joinery, the narrow table features an overhung top, straight legs and a single drawer decorated with an inset cutout. The exterior has been darkened to a black-brown finish, richly textured by traces of the original lacquer. Updated to a conventional modern height, the shallow table is ideal today in an entry, hallway or bathroom.
