Many pre-coinage African currencies were formed after objects of inherent practical value. This three-pronged iron currency piece is shaped in reference to hand-held throwing knifes, such as the kpinga or the mambele. Integral to defensive combat, smithed weaponry unsurprisingly became a display of status and a form of intercultural currency. Forged from iron, this currency knife would have been carried as a sign of wealth and power, and features several decorative blades. We’re struck by the vitality of the wrought metal workmanship and the commanding presence of its emblematic silhouette.
