This intricately-constructed colorful train was painstakingly created by Yoruba artisans in Nigeria in the mid-20th century. Recent designs such as this were based upon sashes that signified the owner's spiritual position within the community and were worn in public ceremonies. Each colorful panel on the densely-beaded sash depicts a Yoruba face with vertical scarification on the cheeks, bordered by cowrie shells indicating wealth and status. Displaying exquisite craftsmanship, this Yoruban train looks brilliant on full display as a table runner or wall hanging.
