This elegant bench from China's Shanxi province follows the classic recessed-leg form, defined by legs that are inset from the top edge and slightly splayed for stability. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, this example dates to the early 19th century and boasts a beautiful, timeworn patina.

The bench features splayed legs carved with vertical fluting, double stretchers at either end and simple spandrels atop each leg, carved with scrollwork resembling delicate orchid blossoms. The original dark lacquer finish has faded with time, well worn by years of use for a soft texture that highlights the wood beneath.

Sides of apron are replacement.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
