This Tibetan storage chest is richly finished with lacquered hide and iron hardware. The front is hand-painted with a fearsome tiger prowling a lush, mountainous landscape. Considered the king of all terrestrial creatures, the tiger is depicted towering over its surroundings, leaping over hills and tall bamboo stalks. The short ends of the trunk are painted with two seated tigers and the top with a flayed tiger pelt. Common motifs in Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist art, tigers are symbols of strength, fearlessness, power, and authority.
