Dated to the early 20th century, this painted wooden tray has a rectangular form raised by a simply carved footed base. The top is painted with a scholar in a courtyard setting, accompanied by a young attendant carrying a qin. The scene is enclosed by a beveled frame painted with floral scrollwork and simple meanders against a black field. Gently faded from a century of use, this small tray is a lovely example of Chinese folk artistry.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
