This richly lacquered cabinet from China's Shanxi province is over a century and a half old, with a finish that has acquired wonderful character and texture with age. Collectors appreciate cabinets configured like this—with doors that span full height, top to bottom of the frame. Historically, Chinese homes were not built with closets, so this cabinet would have stood as the prized centerpiece and the primary place to store clothing, food, books and other daily necessities.
