A particular favorite of artist Almudena Rodriguez, this mixed-media work is first in a series titled Usyn. The title refers to the medical abbreviation for Ulysses Syndrome, a psychological condition suffered by immigrants living in extreme situations. In this compelling work, she explores the worlds from which immigrants must leave behind, the ones that they enter, and those that they long for - as well as the relationships, both hostile and supportive, that they encounter on their journey. Extracting images, logos, and phrases from popular culture, she rearranges these disparate signs to create a single vision determined not by original context, but through aesthetic consideration of the themes of integration and identity. The medium, hand-sewn canvas with metal grommets, suggests the tarps that cover trucks carrying illegal immigrants or comprise the tents of refugee shelters.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
