Woven Bamboo Pack Basket

This hand-crafted storage basket is a vintage pack basket from southeast Asia, used in regions such as Thailand, Laos or Vietnam for harvesting crops or carrying personal belongings. The tall basket is woven with an elegantly tapered form, shaped with a round opening that narrows towards a square base.

The sides of the basket are simply woven of rattan and bamboo and contrasted with two horizontal bands of bamboo finished in glossy black lacquer. Wide strips of bent bamboo create a stable frame and reinforce the top edge with a rounded lip. Small loop handles of braided rattan were originally used to secure a shoulder strap, allowing the basket to be slung over the shoulder or across the back.
