During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This oval ginger jar charms with famille rose decoration of a pair of phoenixes, a benevolent animal of Chinese mythology thought to beckon brightness, light and warmth. Perched beneath the parasol tree, the mythical birds are surrounded by pink peony blossoms, a motif for "wealth, rank and good fortune." A band of rectangular lappets borders the base and auspicious ruyi border the neck, both rendered in pastel enamels of blue, pink and yellow.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
