This earthenware vessel from China's Yunnan province is distinguished by its rustic drip glaze and allover stamped pattern. Originally used for storing rice wine or other liquids, the vase has a dramatically tapered form, with bulbous shoulders that narrow towards the base and neck. The surface is textured with subtle ridges from its coil construction and a graphic design of raised circular medallions, each enclosing the character wáng (王), likely identifying the maker. A dark brown-black glaze sheets across the surface, lingering on each element for an irregular, wabi-sabi appearance.
