The materials, proportion and craftsmanship of this 18th century table are wonderfully executed, representative of the most masterful traditional craftsmanship. It was finely crafted in China’s Jiangsu region out of a rare wood called Zitan, a prized hardwood indigenous to Southern Chinese forests that has a very slow growth cycle. It is said that zitan wood grows over 800 years before harvest. Much of the most collectible Chinese furniture is carved from Zitan wood. The subtly carved apron on this table is connected to the top frame which surrounds a beautifully textured burled panel. Carpenters often waited for burls on trees to develop because they formed swirled specimens—each completely unique.
