Dated to the early 19th century, this lattice panel was originally a window insert to a set of tall paneled courtyard doors. The geometric lattice pattern is linear and open, and was designed to allow light and fresh air to flow into a room while still maintaining privacy. Assembling lattice was a puzzling task, created by the precise interlocking of long and short pieces of shaped wood. The latticework on this window panel forms a pattern of interlocking octagons, reminiscent of the golden coin motif for wealth and prosperity. Softened by rounded edges, the lattice is set within a beveled frame and looks fantastic as a sculptural wall hanging.
