This pair of courtyard panels with geometric lattice screens likely originated in an aristocratic Chinese home with neutral and balanced interiors. The diamond lattice pattern is very linear and open, designed originally to allow light and air into a room while maintaining privacy. Creating lattice was a geometric puzzle, very different from making fretwork by carving or perforating a solid panel. This linear pattern was created by the precise interlocking of long and short pieces of carved wood. The backs of the open panels are flush, with less dimension than the front.

Dimensions listed describe an individual panel.
