This early 20th century lattice window panel likely originated in an aristocratic Chinese home with neutral and balanced interiors. Decorative yet functional, lattice panels were designed to allow light and air into a room while maintaining privacy. Creating lattice was a puzzling task, requiring by the precise interlocking of long and short pieces of shaped wood. The latticework on this panel forms a grid of circular openings, decorated by beaded edges and stylized plum blossoms, symbols of winter and longevity. Weathered from a century of use, a layer of dark lacquer finishes the panel with rich texture.
