This grand early 20th-century staircase was originally used to access the loft in a traditional courtyard home in China's Shanxi province. Utilizing mortise-and-tenon joinery methods, with minimal use of nails and screws, the monumental steps were crafted of northern elmwood timber, now beautifully softened by a rich patina. Leaned against a wall, this rustic staircase is the perfect accent to a living room or study, used as an unexpected display stand or bookcase.
