A symbol of compassion and wisdom, Guan Yin is a bodhisattva venerated by Buddhists and Taoists alike. This exquisite porcelain sculpture from around 1900 depicts the serene-faced goddess spilling roses from a basket. The blossoms cascade down her flowing robes. Crafted with keen attention to detail and a sense of ethereal lightness, the figure is made of a clay known as blanc de chine. The clay’s low iron content keeps its white color after firing. A white glaze is often applied to further enhance its pristine appearance.
