While trading in the marketplaces of Thailand, small bronze weights in various animal forms could be seen at every stall. Used to counterbalance scales while purchasing goods, these hand-carved weights became a sought after curio from distant lands in the early 20th century. The most common examples were birds, this diminutive elephant would have been a standout in the marketplace. Subtle detailing, rich color and satisfying heft make this a lovely sculptural object.
