Along with paper, ink, and inkstone, the brush was among the Four Treasures found in a traditional scholar’s studio. The brush served as a direct link to the artist’s creative spirit and provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic.

Arguably the scholars' most important tool, the brush was used to compose official documents, works of poetry, and painted scrolls. This large early 20th century example is formed of lacquered elmwood and would have been used for broad, gestural brushstrokes. The horsehair bristles have been recently replaced, recreating the brush's original appearance.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
