Today known by the Japanese name “ishi-sashi,” meaning “awesome stone padlock,” weights such as this one were once used as part of intensive martial arts training. Shaped like an ancient Chinese lock, the weight was carved from limestone and used much like a modern kettle bell. Students would grip the handle and either swing the weight around or use it in flexing exercises. Made in the 19th century, the weight is rustically carved and sculptural-- an unexpected element in the home or garden.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
